Calder Classics Online - Introduction to Modern Greek Language

Many students who travel to the ancient heart of classical culture become transfixed by the modern-day country. Expand on your Ancient Greek studies and equip yourself to continue traveling back to Greece by learning the essentials of the language spoken today.

“Intro to Modern Greek

The Level 1 course is for beginners. Students dedicate sessions to learning the basics of the modern Greek language, beginning with the alphabet, pronunciation, recognizing the genders of the nouns, including noun, adjective and article declensions, verb forms, and other parts of speech, as well as the basics of Greek syntax. Those with some experience in the language can enjoy portions of the course as a review. We use a textbook designed to help students acquire the ability to read, understand and write Modern Greek as quickly as possible. At the end of the course, students have a working vocabulary of about 200 words and are able to hold a conversation with each other.

The Level 2 course is for students who have taken the Level 1 course or already have some familiarity with the language. Following a quick review of the full article, adjective and nouns table and the active forms of verbs, this Level 2 section introduces more advanced grammatical topics. The course also introduces non-indicative verb forms such as infinitives, imperatives, and participles. Students have a chance to read short stories in Greek from their textbook, practicing accurate translations and incorporating exercises on the recognition of grammar covered in class. At the end of the course students have a working vocabulary of close to 400 words and have sharpened their conversational skills. If necessary, we will provide a diagnostic test to determine the student's correct level.

Testimonials - Calder Classics Online

I personally find the courses they [Calder Classics] offer the most informative and interactive (and FUN!!). I learned a lot during the four weeks that I have spent here (2 weeks for reading Latin poems, 2 weeks of Intro to Greek), maybe more than I could have learned in a semester in other places. I totally loved the courses and thank you so much for providing me with such a wonderful experience!

My Calder Classics experience was amazing, my teacher was super nice and very helpful! I learned a lot about Augustan Rome and read many interesting authors. Although I wish we had been able to actually go to Rome, I really enjoyed my experience!

The small class sizes made everything much more engaging.

It is hard to recreate the classroom environment over the internet, but I think that this class has done a good job. There is a good amount of material and it is interesting and engaging.

Calder Classics program did compare favorably with other online classes that I've taken, it was in fact a lot more informative and engaging than other online classes that I've taken.

Calder Classics offered lessons daily which was definitely helpful while other programs that I've attended such s creative writing met once or twice a week, I believe this kind of regime was essential for learning any language online.
